Congratulations to star volunteer Ian Ian has been befriending Joyce since 2019. He takes her to church on Sundays and collects her after she’s had tea with the congregation. Ian has gone above and beyond in his befriending relationship; so we celebrated this by awarding him as one of our star volunteers! Here is what he had to say; What inspired you to start volunteering? I work in social care but in the background office, so getting out and doing things with people seemed a good balance with my work, and something I missed, which also helps bring my work more alive. Joyce always makes me smile and brightens my day. We have lots of interesting conversations and chats about life, love and her work. Can you share a memorable moment? I feel like I have become part of her family and their thoughtfulness, they always ask after my family and how they are, particularly when one has been seriously ill. What skills have you gained through your volunteering? My time with Joyce has really helped with my work, helping me to reflect on the experiences of people who need that little extra support, and how it needs to reflect what they want and what works for them. What motivates you to keep dedicating your time? I enjoy the time we have together, as well as the conversations with her church community who are all very welcoming to a non-church person! It’s just part of my life and I hope it gives her as much enjoyment as it gives me. It also means her family know she is ok on a Sunday as they provide a lot of support to her, so it gives them a break too. This all makes it worthwhile. What advice would you give on becoming a volunteer, particularly in supporting older people in the community? Listen, be interested, and relax, people’s lives are fascinating and we have more in common than you might think!!
