Volunteering Volunteer blog Volunteer spotlight- Joe Joe started volunteering at just 17 years old, helping with fundraising events such as our Sunset Soiree and inaugural Strollathon. He recently represented the Charity at a Health and Wellbeing event. Joe says: ‘I enjoy being able to interact with people, communities and organisations, promoting the work we do at Link Age Southwark’ When discussing his volunteering, he says ‘I get something from it as much as I’m giving. These opportunities have helped me grow and to feel fulfilled,’ He talks fondly of his grandparents, with his own grandmother living alone: ‘….but she is thriving, doing her line dancing, taking part in a book club’. Through them he recognizes the power of community engagement. Joe feels that Link Age Southwark is about ‘linking the ages’ and he asks: ‘How can I, as a 17-year-old, build a connection with older communities?’ He sees the power in the intergenerational work we do and hopes to continue nurturing that in his own journey. For now, he will look to complete his studies, continue with a foundation year in acting and for his 18th birthday he says: “I’d like to become a Volunteer Befriender”.
