Volunteering Volunteer blog Florence and Gulzira Florence, originally from Lagos, Nigeria, moved to the UK in the 1960s and now lives in Peckham. Gulzira, from Kyrgyzstan, spent time living in Hong Kong before moving to the UK. Gulzira works as a teacher supporting pupils with special educational needs and once a week, after work, she befriends Florence. Their time together seems to provide a relaxing and safe space for both women. Gulzira enjoys “coming here and slowing down away from the chaos outside”, while Florence also values this contact: "We have tea, share something to eat. I really appreciate that." Florence recalls, "one day, my daughter and I went to Gulzira’s house. We had lunch with her husband and enjoyed the day." Gulzira has also met Florence's family, including her children and grandchildren. She says "they all know me and trust me. They thank me for coming when they can’t." Initially, Gulzira started as a hospital buddy during Florence’s knee surgery recovery, support that was intended for just three months. However, the connection they formed was so strong that they couldn’t part. "Can I stay with Mama Florence because we have built a good relationship?" Gulzira asked, so their friendship continued. When talking of befriending Gulzira adds, "the feelings you have are different. It’s what you feel when you have a grandparent. She’s my grandma." Their story is a testament to the power of connection, "thank you, Link Age, for bringing us close to each other!" they both exclaim.
