Volunteering Volunteer blog George and Tawanda Tawanda and George have been matched for 6 months. When talking about their connection, George says: “Tawanda has been a good friend to me. We have a nice chat when he visits.” The two of them exchange stories about their children and their experience of being a parent. Tawanda comments: “We appreciate our time together and have shared family values. Being with George is a wonderful learning opportunity for me, as he has a wealth of tales to tell and experience of the world.” George came to the UK from St Lucia in 1957 at the age of 19. He reminisces about his early life there: “The sunshine, the sea is all around you. It’s very beautiful.” On coming to the UK, George had a successful career as a chef at the Savoy Hotel. He says proudly, “I never went to college, but I learnt from the best.” “You’re famous George!” laughs Tawanda, “Tell the story, about making cups of tea!” George chuckles and says that not only did he cook for royalty, but he was the only one who Prince Harry said made his ‘perfect cup of tea’. George says that his recipe for success is: “Hard work keeps you young, be good, build respect and be nice to people.” When discussing his volunteer role, Tawanda says that he believes in the concept of community and wants to play his part: “I hope to add some cheer and interest to the life of at least one person.” Find out how to get involved If you would like to become a volunteer befriender, like Tawanda, find out how you can get involved below.
